Data Loss can Cripple Your Business

But none of this is supposed to happen when we come to big companies, right? Wrong. Ernest and Young, HP, Oracle – the names are very familiar. They all have suffered data disasters of some kind or the other over the past one year. While a large business may not have to shut shop, the blow dealt to a particular section can be crippling enough. On the other hand, a tiny business run by a student from his or her borrowed laptop might still pick itself up after barely a day or two’s downtime after a data disaster. So the question that poses itself is which are the companies that stand to lose most after a data loss scenario, and why is it so with them?

Susceptible Companies

Let us first check which are the companies that stand maximum chances of closing down post-data loss:

Any company that is highly dependent on data and whose storage media setup is small or inadequate for its needs, is playing with fire. Irrespective of size, storage is a matter that is of utmost importance. Sometimes, we get totally shocking news such as a data security company’s being attacked by hackers, or a data storage provider failing in its duties. Inadequate storage facilities is a major cause of hard drive failure, file corruption, fragmentation etc.
A company that requires its data on a daily basis for its day-to-day functioning would be in deep, troubled waters without it if this crucial data disappears. Many companies would point out that this information needs to be updated every day, and it is not possible to keep backups on a regular basis. This is a completely assumption, since it is now technically possible to work on two disks simultaneously, and one can always keep saving information on a removable disk or a USB device while working. Ignorance will demand a heavy price from your business if you are not careful enough.
A company that keeps updating its regular client database every day, and does not have adequately safe backup of this, stands the same chance of disaster as the company mentioned above.
A company that deals with sensitive data such as security material, finance, direct customer servicing (including transaction detail handling), or online booking of tours and hotels stands a chance of attack by hackers at any time. They have to be prepared at all times for the worst.
Companies with a rich IP base needs to protect it. There are unscrupulous and equally brainy rivals out there trying to get your research papers, documents, or software programmes by the simple method from you. A little break in the security is all they need to get in there and run away before you know what hit you.

The Barricade

How do you stop this from happening to you? The first answer is, of course, backup, backup, and more secure backup. The next is vigilance against viruses and hackers, and updating of both staff and software. It is no point having the best infrastructure without the manpower and the required expertise. The next is to keep hardware perfectly serviced, and take adequate care to ensure optimum performance level at least risk.
